We can talk about two kinds of quality: how well the design of the product meets the customers requires (design quality) and how well the built product matches the specifications of that design (quality of conformance to design). In addition, we can measure whether our manufacturing processes are capable of building products with high quality at the rate we need to achieve (process capability). Knowing how these different aspects of quality will affect the success of our project drives how we apply statistical process control.
