For me personally, I don’t usually eat cow cheese, unless it’s on pizza. I’ve also had goat cheese in the past, however I don’t eat it in my every day diet. With that said, goat cheese can be a good alternative for cow cheese because, for some people, goat cheese can be easier on your digestive system.

Before I share why goat cheese is easier to digest, let me first state the obvious.
- Goat cheese is a form of dairy that comes from goat milk.
- Cow cheese is a form of dairy that comes from cow’s milk.

However, even though goat cheese and cow cheese are both dairy products, and are processed the same way, they are made up of different nutrients.

Up to 70% of the population may have a differing level of issues with digesting the lactose in dairy products. If you’re not familiar with what lactose is, it’s the sugar found in dairy milk.

The most common lactose intolerance symptoms include:
- Bloating
- Gas
- Diarrhea
- Stomach pain

When it comes to the digestive system, many people who have a hard time digesting dairy from a cow have an easier time digesting dairy from a goat.

Goat dairy milk is easier to digest because it is lower in lactose and has a different protein make up compared to cow dairy milk.

When compared to cow milk dairy, goat milk also contains lower amounts of the A1 casein protein. A1 casein is a type of protein that may cause gut inflammation for people who are sensitive to dairy milk. Goat milk contains more A2 casein protein, which has been known to be less inflammatory and less disruptive to the digestive system than A1 casein.

Goat Cheese Nutrition Facts
A 1 oz (28.4g) serving of goat cheese contains:
- Calories: 103
- Protein: 6g
- Carbohydrates: 0g
- Fat: 8g

Cow Cheese Nutrition Facts:
A 1 oz (28g) slice serving of cheddar cow cheese contains:
- Calories: 113
- Protein: 7g
- Carbohydrates: 0g
- Fat: 9g

As you can see, both goat cheese and cow cheese provide similar amounts of calories, protein, and fat. However, goat cheese does contain more medium chain fatty acids than cow milk. This can be beneficial as medium chain fatty acids are known to be broken down in the body faster to be used for energy, rather than being stored as body fat.

You can get different types of goat cheese such as:
- Gouda goat cheese
- Cheddar goat cheese
- Brie goat cheese
- Blue goat cheese

However, the issue with substituting cow cheese for goat cheese is the texture and taste is different. Most textures of goat cheese tends to be softer and creamier like cream cheese, rather than the shredded cow cheese you would put on nachos. However, in some grocery stores you can find shredded goat cheese. The taste of goat cheese is also more distinct and tangier when compared to cow cheese.

Bottom Line: Goat Cheese Vs. Cow Cheese
Depending on your level of lactose intolerance, some people who have digestive issues with cow products can get away with eating goat products.
