Jazz Improv: Objective versus Rules - What not to do as a jazz guitar improviser - The Vlog

Jazz Improv: Objective versus Rules - What not to do as a jazz guitar improviser - The Vlog

This is from a recent conversation with students on my Jazz Guitar Accelerator.

Rule of thumb: the objective is NOT to show you know the rules of the game.

Or, said in another way: the RULES are not the GAME! You want to score points.

That applies to sports, science, music, story telling, writing, public speaking, politics, family life, etc.

So, in short, when you take a jazz solo *try* to say something. Never mind the "correctness" of what you're playing: tell a story. Forget the rules.

Saying something (ie become a jazz poet with your lines) is like scoring points in that case.

Of course, of course, of course. ...you need to know the rules. Practice your drills. Know your scales. Understand the chord progression. Memorize the songs. Practice, listen, rehearse and get better. OF COURSE: I have nothing against that.

The advice here: if you're jamming, playing a gig or performing for a bunch of friends, just make sure you're not "practicing on stage". That sucks. Period.

Watch the vlog to understand more analogies (like the one I made about Stephen King).
