Russian tanks drove from the Liaur to the Harb-Maidon training ground bordering Afghanistan where the Taliban is leading an offensive against government troops, on Tuesday.
"As part of the upcoming joint tactical exercise, Russian tank crews from the 201 military base stationed in Tajikistan have covered the distance of 200 kilometres (124 miles) from the Liaur range to the Harb-Maidon training ground near the border with Afghanistan," the Russian Defence Ministry said in a statement. The manoeuvre was part of the drills too, according to their statement. The tank crews trained to protect the convoy and to repel attacks and airstrikes.
On August 5-10 troops from the 201 Russian military base in Tajikistan and the Central Military District as well as soldiers from Russia's Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Protection Troops and electronic warfare units will take part in the military exercise alongside Tajik and Uzbek armed forces at the Harb-Maidon training ground.
On July 7 Tajikistan filed an appeal to the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) asking to help handle the instability on its Afghan border.
As NATO started withdrawing the troops from Afghanistan, the Taliban movement launched an offensive against government troops forcing at least 1,000 of them to flee over the Tajik border.
