5 Things to Bear in Mind Before Putting Up a Poultry House (Poultry Beginners' Pod Episo2-11)

Over the years, I've been asked many times how to construct a poultry house and my answer has never changed. In this second part of 11 part series of Poultry Beginners’ Podcast, I’ll discuss 5 things you need to include in your housing plan. Make no mistake: If you plan to put up a poultry house, ensure the following: adequate floor space, optimum climate control (humidity, air quality, and temperature), lighting, correct choice of building materials and farm biosecurity plan (see chap. 2 and fig. 2.1 and 2.2 Diary of a Poultry Farmer). If you’re rearing long maturity birds such as improved Kienyeji or commercial layers and broiler chicken, ensure 2 and 1 square foot per bird respectively. Remember to use materials that are easy to clean and disinfect like metal sheets and concrete (avoid wood at all cost except for the roof or frame). In the third episode, I’ll discuss 4 things to bear in mind when choosing a breed of chicken/ poultry to rear.
