Today, U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz presented retired VSO Sgt. Tom Dane with the Congressional Badge of Bravery for his actions responding to an armed carjacking call in 2019.
The suspect in this case opened fire on deputies while fleeing into the woods, with a bullet striking Sgt. Dane in the head. Sgt. Dane continued to engage the suspect in an effort to protect his fellow deputies, and only tended to his own injury after the threat was over.
Also attending today's presentation with Sheriff Mike Chitwood and command staff were state Sen. Tom Wright, state Rep. Elizabeth Fetterhoff, Volusia County Councilman Danny Robins, Volusia County Council, District 3 and representatives of U.S. Rep. Marco Rubio and U.S. Sen. Rick Scott.
