With the trend of EV continues to hype, some questions arise as to whether electric vehicles are really helpful to the environment. But what is really the truth behind the environmental-friendly tag of EVs?
By comparison, conventional or traditional cars utilized internal combustion engines (ICEs) that primarily run on fossil fuels like gas or diesel while EVs, on the other hand, use one or more electric motors that is powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. These are the same kind of batteries that is used to power smartphones and laptops. In addition, EVs are plugged into external power sources for charging similar to other electronic devices. Besides being less polluting than fuel engines, this means that lithium-ion batteries are said to often work more efficiently. Several pieces of research suggest that they have a guaranteed life span of 8-10 years.
However, a study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Energy Initiative mentioned that the battery and fuel production for an EV produces higher emissions than the manufacturing of an automobile. But those higher environmental costs are counterbalanced by EVs’ superior energy efficiency over time. To put it simply, the total emissions per mile for battery-powered cars are comparatively lower than cars with internal combustion engines.
Sergey Paltsev, a senior research scientist at the MIT Energy Initiative and one of the study’s authors, explained in a CNBC report, “If we are going to take a look at the current situation, in some countries, electric vehicles are better even with the current grid.”
Paltsev also added that the full benefits of EVs will be recognized only after the electricity sources become renewable but it still might take several decades for that to happen.
In order for EVs to gain power while it is on the road, a network of charging stations is needed for the batteries to access power. Furthermore, the driving range of electric vehicles depends on its battery life span thus; extreme driving conditions or weather may affect the range of EVs because they use more energy to compensate. Since they do not rely on fossil fuels for power, they do not contain certain ICE vehicles' elements.
