How fencing changed in the twentieth century

Join us as we discuss the evolution of fencing through the twentieth century with Richard Emmerick. Over the last century competitive fencing has changed in a variety ways driven by developments in sports science, technology and changes in culture. Technology has caused differences in blade design, grip design, scoring, clothes, mask and shoes. Sports Science has brought about changes in stance, the preparation and recovery associated with competitions and training and research into various aspects of fencing movements. Culture has brought about the creation of the fencing sabre and has been the driver behind clothing and equipment changes based upon safety. It has also both inhibited and contributed to the involvement of women in the sport. It has also been the driver to the establishment of State Associations and the National body. Likewise it is also the cause of the participation rate fluctuations in the sport

Richard Emmerick commenced fencing in 1962 with coach Charles Stanmore at the Sydney Fencing Club. He continued competitive fencing until a shoulder injury in 1974 caused the end of his effective competitive fencing career. His highest achievement was a 2nd in National Foil. He did continue club fencing for some years after the injury.
In 1974 Richard started a fencing club in Blaxland for pupils of Blaxland High School and any adults he could tempt. The club has had a number of venues and is now at Lawson with last year’s membership being a little over one hundred (They have an amazing executive and coaching team).

Apart from club duties Richard has been State Foil Coach, State Epee Coach, and Assistant National Epee Coach. He has been manager/coach of a national team on tour to Kuwait.

Richard has been the senior author of a paper on the development of competitive fencing in NSW which was published in the peer reviewed journal of the Australian Society for Sport History.
