Today Tiaki was fitted with a GPS tracking device by experienced researchers from Parker Conservation. While Tiaki was being fitted, ranger Theo Thompson took photos and we had two chicks watching the process (SSTrig and Plateau who both did some hovering).
From Ranger Sharyn Broni " A wider study of the entire Northern Royal Albatross is being conducted this year. And in a first for a Royalcam chick Tiaki as received a tracker. Trackers have deployed on northern royals on the Chathams where 99% of the world population of this species breeds.
We are extremely lucky to have 20g devices are available to track LGK, LGL and Tiaki. Although LGL's device failed it has provided valuable data.
Devices are extremely light compared to the weight of the bird and attached to back feathers. These feathers molt within a year and the device will fall off. The device is solar powered and will remotely send data until molting.

~~ LGL hatched in 2008 and is a 12 year female paired with LGK hatched in 2009 an 11 year male. They have been together since 2017 and became our Royalcam couple for the 2018/2019 season. Their first breeding season produced an egg but it later died. In 2019 their chick Karere fledged successfully. LGL laid her egg on Nov. 7th 2020. LGL/ LGK are the Royalcam couple for the 2020/21 season! The chick hatched on January 24th 2021.
