When addressing chronic back pain we often overlook the abdominal wall and the iliopsoas. These muscles often carry trigger points that can be causing back pain. It’s not just the quadratic lumborum and erector spinae muscles causing the issue. Many times it is the muscles on the front of the spine that can be causing theses problems. Using a foam roller ball that is about the size of a softball does a great job of getting into these muscles and releasing the trigger points. I personally like to use the ones that provide vibration. The vibration will allow for the muscle to relax faster and therefore release the trigger point.
Trigger points are discrete, focal, hyperirritable spots located in a taut band of skeletal muscle. They produce pain locally and in a referred pattern and often accompany chronic musculoskeletal disorders. By using a foam roller and applying pressure you can release these trigger points and elevate pain.

Foam rolling in combination with a good daily mobility practice can eliminate most chronic back issues! I include a daily practice that I call the developmental warmup in every program I make (even my Free 7 day savage shred program!)
The development warm up. This is a practice which I do before every workout. I think in exercise we to often will put the emphasis on work and effort over the concept of molding. We need to focus on molding our bodies. Making them strong and limber. I practice the Developmental warm-up daily. I do this because it is part of my molding protocol. The body is practical, you either use or loose it.
The Developmental Warm-up follows the developmental movement patterns that were given to you at birth and set you up to be bipedal (walk upright). These patterns are hard wired into your system. If you practice them daily you can keep your body healthy and mobile like a child. Mold your body daily and enjoy the mobility of child.
