Gangtok, Sept 29:
It seems that tourists flow is slowly returning to normalcy in Sikkim as the number of tourists visiting state has increased in last fifteen days. The tourism industry was badly hit by the Covid -19 pandemic and Sikkim is still recovering from its impact and tourism is backbone of Sikkim's economy.
As per the Permit Cell of Sikkim today only East district which has famous tourist destinations like Tsomgo and Nathula pass received 1087 tourists including local tourist while north District which has tourist destinations such Gurudongmar lake, Yumthang and valleys has received 317 tourists. This number speaks that normalcy has returned to some extent and must tell here this is just a beginning of Sikkim’s tourist season which will last till December so stakeholders are hoping that this time they will have good tourist season if predicted third wave of pandemic doesn’t appear. \
While in other hand Sikkim government, in order to revive tourism in the Sikkim, the state government has decided organise mega tourism attraction programme called "Visit Sikkim 2022". Visit Sikkim 2022 will last for whole year and the program will try to bring as much as tourism which was announced by CM Singh Tamang.
Pandemic has hampered tourism at international and nation level badly hit at presently also it is under recovering phase then how Sikkim is tourism based economy there is no any doubt and it was badly hit by the pandemic along with the nation and world. Tourism department had already drawn an outline for the programme with the tourism stakeholders and regarding tourism revival through Visit Sikkim 2022 programme and many things are still yet to decide.
At present Sikkim is witnessing an average 30 cases of Covid -19 in a day with less than 5 percent positivity rate and as far as entry of tourists to the state is concern all those including tourists who have received at least one dose of CovID-19 vaccine or
carry negative RT PCR report conducted within 72 hours shall be permitted to
enter and no checking at any of the check posts and free
movement at check posts are there in place. For all tourists entering the State of Sikkim, these requirements shall be verified by the concerned hotels where they are staying and the process shall be
overseen by Tourism Department.
