What do you do for a living? When it comes down to it what do you actually do? What to you actually create, what do you improve, what do you contribute?
For some viewers that find themselves as Doctors, Nurses, Mechanics or builders, the value you create and the answer to the question, might be very obvious.
However, for those that find themselves as a middle manager or as a seemingly unimportant cog in a giant corporation, the answer might be a little less apparent.
The rise of meaningless jobs, particularly in Western societies has become an epidemic.
The continued rise of jobs and careers in which are seemingly pointless, incredibly mundane and in which you could be replaced at the drop of a hat, does not come without consequence.
The existential dread and struggle to find purpose in mundane, meaningless work, are undoubtedly contributors to the collective mental health of people around the world becoming worse than ever. However, one of the few silver linings that came out of the Pandemic, was that things started to change.
Wether it was widespread working from home showing how pointless and unnecessary the 2 hour commute to the office was or maybe the reduction of middle manager meetings in which it was found there were no changes to productivity, but workers around the globe have had enough. Fed up with the combination of meaningless work and being underpaid, workers across all industries have begun quitting and refusing to work mundane, meaningless jobs.
With employers referring to the movement as the 2021 turnover tsunami, and with historic numbers of the global workforce reporting they are planning on leaving their jobs this year, its as if workers globally have begun to wake up to their true value.
In his latest interview, famous investor Chamath Palihapitiya, gave his opinion on this labour crisis, how he thinks it can be fixed and also the impact it will have on the Economy.
