NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet says government legislating religious freedom can cause a lot of “challenges,” warning against rushing into legislation.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison introduced a religious discrimination bill to parliament last week, which has been mostly supported by both the Labor and Liberal parties.
However, Mr Perrottet says he has always been “pretty hesitant” in relation to religious freedom legislation.
“I think, when you’re going down a path where you have the parliament legislating freedom, that can cause a lot of challenges and it could be a future government that then can legislate to take those freedoms away,” Mr Petrrottet told Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell.
“When the state gets involved in these types of areas, I think substantial challenges can transpire.
“I remember during the same-sex marriage debate there was a lot of discussion at the time about people who were going to get discriminated here and discriminated there … none of that eventuated.
“We haven’t needed it for over a hundred years, why now?”
