Infectious diseases physician Professor Peter Collignon says the fact New South Wales’ COVID cases have been decreasing since the first major easing of restrictions is a “very good sign”.
“I would actually think we’re going to continue to have probably 100-200 cases a day over summer … but I expect the consequences to be markedly less for two reasons,” he told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
“First of all so many more people are vaccinated and I think NSW is likely in those over the age of 16 to get 90 per cent plus vaccination which means even if you get COVID it will be much milder.
“That actually means that our hospitals should be able to cope, we should be able to cope.
"And it’s also summer and that means these viruses just generally spread less.”
Professor Collignon said he is more worried about next winter than the period from December to May.
“But we’ll be able to learn what happens with the northern hemisphere, if and what we may have to do to protect ourselves next winter.”
